ABSTRACT

Stimulus equivalence occurs when stimuli become related to other stimuli when only a few, but not all, have been linked via training. The emergence of new relations without training is only one of the efficacious outcomes of stimulus equivalence programming. The purposes of this talk are to provide the attendee the following: First, a brief history of stimulus equivalence research, including critical terms, their definitions and relevant variables; Second, a review of the important recent experimental research investigating variables that promote the formation of stimulus equivalence; and Third, presentation of the seminal studies in the nascent field of equivalence based instruction.

Target Audience: Professionals for whom the topic is within their scope of practice. We welcome students and others who are also interested in the topic to join us.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this event participants should be able to:

• Select the critical training structures used in stimulus equivalence research and rate each in order of efficacy in setting the occasion for the formation of equivalence classes
• Identify which members of a conditional discrimination may become members of an equivalence class
• Identify the definition of transfer of function and a relevant example
• Identify the definition of stimulus control topography coherence theory and a relevant example;

PRESENTER BIO

R.W. Maguire is a Behavior Analyst with 40+ years of applied and research experience. He is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Behavior Analysis at Simmons University. Dr. Maguire holds a BA in Psychology, a MA in Applied Behavior Analysis and a PhD in Experimental Psychology and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Dr. Maguire is a published researcher and frequent presenter at local, state and national professional conferences, particularly in the areas of stimulus control, stimulus equivalence and errorless instructional protocols.
