ABSTRACT: PART 1

Individuals with ASDs exhibit behavioral problems, including tantrums, failure to respond to parent request, and aggression. These behaviors interfere with the performance of daily living skills, limit the child’s ability to benefit from educational services, and may increase social isolation. Uncertainty on how to manage these behavioral problems may also amplify caregiver stress. The recognized struggles parents face in raising a child with ASD have sparked increased interest in evidence-based parent training (PT) programs, as they empower parents to be the agent of change for their child. The Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network developed a manualized parent training program that utilizes techniques grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis to teach families of children with ASD how to manage their child’s behavioral problems. The RUBI program was evaluated in a series of studies that found that it is acceptable to parents, can be reliably delivered by trained therapists, reduces children’s disruptive behavior, and can be done both in person or via telehealth and in group formats.

In the first course in our On-Demand RUBI Parent Training Series, An Intensive Introduction to The RUBI Parent Training Program: Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder - Part 1, Dr. Karen Bearss provides an overview of disruptive behaviors in ASD and provides an in depth review of the development and empirical investigation of the RUBI Parent Training program as a novel treatment for disruptive behavior in ASD. This course is perfect for those that want an in-depth look at the evidence base behind the RUBI Parent Training Program.

PRESENTER BIO

Karen Bearss is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She serves as Clinical Director of the Seattle Children's Autism Center where she also directs the RUBI Clinic. Dr. Bearss earned her B.S. in Psychology as well as her M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. She is a leading expert in the development, testing, and implementation of caregiver-mediated interventions for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and co-occurring challenging behaviors. Dr. Bearss was a Co-Investigator on the multi-site NIMH collaborative study of parent training for disruptive behaviors in youth with ASD and was designated as the first author on the primary paper from this trial, published in JAMA. She also is the first author of the RUBI Parent Training Manual, now available as part of the Programs that Work series at Oxford University Press.
