Dr. VInce Carbone: Response Strength as a Variable Influencing Intraverbally Controlled Responses in Children with Autism
ABSTRACT
A few studies with children with autism have implicated the on-set of joint stimulus control or response saltation as an independent variable in listener responding. Although suggested in conceptual writings on this topic, no research thus far has identified the role of a decrease in response strength as a variable in producing multiply controlled responses in children. This presentation will detail the findings of a study with children with autism that demonstrated the effects of a decrease in response strength on intraverbally controlled responses. The experimental preparation was arranged to identify the variables that controlled children’s responses to questions about which photos of objects were missing from an array of previously displayed photos. The role of joint control is discussed as an explanatory mechanism for the findings. Video illustrations of the children’s responding will be presented.
Target Audience: Professionals for whom the topic is within their scope of practice. We welcome students and others who are also interested in the topic to join us.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this event:
- Participants will identify the role of response saltation as a controlling variable in joint control research.
- Participants will identify the importance of the echoic repertoire in the development of a joint control response repertoire.
