ABSTRACT: An Intensive Introduction to The RUBI Parent Training Program: Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: PART 1

Individuals with ASDs exhibit behavioral problems, including tantrums, failure to respond to parent request, and aggression. These behaviors interfere with the performance of daily living skills, limit the child’s ability to benefit from educational services, and may increase social isolation. Uncertainty on how to manage these behavioral problems may also amplify caregiver stress. The recognized struggles parents face in raising a child with ASD have sparked increased interest in evidence-based parent training (PT) programs, as they empower parents to be the agent of change for their child. The Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network developed a manualized parent training program that utilizes techniques grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis to teach families of children with ASD how to manage their child’s behavioral problems. The RUBI program was evaluated in a series of studies that found that it is acceptable to parents, can be reliably delivered by trained therapists, reduces children’s disruptive behavior, and can be done both in person or via telehealth and in group formats.

In the first course in our On-Demand RUBI Parent Training Series, An Intensive Introduction to The RUBI Parent Training Program: Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder - Part 1, Dr. Karen Bearss provides an overview of disruptive behaviors in ASD and provides an in depth review of the development and empirical investigation of the RUBI Parent Training program as a novel treatment for disruptive behavior in ASD. This course is perfect for those that want an in-depth look at the evidence base behind the RUBI Parent Training Program.

The content in this course was sourced from the two most recent live iterations of this workshop- January and May 2021.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course participants should be able to:

  1. Identify differences in the presentation of disruptive behavior in youth with ASD compared to neurotypical peers
  2. Identify the rationale for parent training (PT) as a front-line treatment for children with ASD
  3. Identify the various types of PT for children with ASD, including current research findings
  4. Identify the key aspects of the development of the RUBI program, including findings from a series of large-scale randomized clinical trials

ABSTRACT: An Intensive Introduction to The RUBI Parent Training Program: Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: PART 2

This course is a continuation of the introductory series and provides an in-depth review of content for the 11 Core and 7 Supplemental RUBI sessions. The content in this on-demand course was sourced from the two most recent live iterations of this workshop- January and June 2021.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the content and structure of the 11 Core and 7 Supplemental RUBI sessions
  2. Identify successful homework strategies corresponding to each RUBI session.
  3. Identify core aspects of RUBI in action through case examples.

BONUS CONTENT: Attendees who register for these courses will also receive "An Introduction to ABA for RUBI." This short recording provides a introduction to the basis behind the program for individuals who are less familiar with applied behavior analysis (ABA) and offers an excellent model on how to use low-barrier language to explain key concepts for those that have an extensive background in ABA.

ABSTRACT: Clinical Implementation of the RUBI Parent Training Program

This workshop is a continuation of the introductory series and is designed to prepare clinicians for the implementation the RUBI program in practice. Through the use of manual materials and case exemplars, this 4-hour workshop will focus on treatment delivery strategies and challenges, including considerations when choosing cases, discussion of common “pitfalls” when implementing session materials, and how to promote successful delivery of the intervention in order to meet the needs of individual children and their families. Ongoing training opportunities and certification criteria also will be reviewed. Participants will be expected to have access to the RUBI Clinician Manual and accompanying Parent Workbook for this workshop.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course participants should be able to:

  1. Identify target clinical populations appropriate for the delivery of RUBI.
  2. Identify clinical considerations for each of the 11 Core and 7 Supplemental RUBI sessions.
  3. Identify common barriers to treatment fidelity and develop responsive solutions.
  4. Select treatment delivery plans that are responsive to clinic demands and family needs.

ABSTRACT: Setting up Shop: Clinic Design Considerations when Implementing RUBI

There is a pressing need to close the chasm between demonstrated efficacy of interventions for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) validated under ideal conditions and their effectiveness when implemented in community settings. With over a dozen published research studies, The Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network Parent Training Program has been found to be acceptable to parents, reliably delivered by trained therapists, and effective in reducing disruptive behavior when evaluated under ideal conditions (i.e. efficacy trials). RUBI is emerging as an important component of short-term, effective treatment for children with ASD and has been expanding reach into “real-word” clinical practice. This workshop focuses on considerations and intervention modifications required to successfully transition RUBI, as studied in a clinical trial, into a viable service for community practitioners.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course participants should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast research versus clinical implementation of RUBI
  2. Identify exemplars of implementation of RUBI in a clinical setting
  3. Select standardized assessment procedures that allow for patient characterization and outcomes assessment of RUBI in a clinical setting
  4. Identify viable approaches to practice-related implementation considerations (e.g., billing, room lay out, incorporation of the child in session).
  5. Select methods to incorporate trainees into a RUBI clinic model

ABSTRACT: Group and Telehealth Implementation of the RUBI Parent Training Program

Given its extensive line of research, the Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network RUBI program can now be considered an empirically supported treatment for parents of children with ASD and disruptive behavior. It is now ready for wider implementation. Two potential expansions of RUBI is delivery of the intervention via telehealth and in a group format. Both group and telehealth delivery of RUBI increase patient access to an evidenced-based intervention while also potentially being more cost-effective than one-on-one delivery. Group PT could also confer the added benefit of social support for the participating parents. This workshop describes efforts to extend RUBI via telehealth and group delivery, including modifications required to successfully deliver the program in these formats.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course participants should be able to:

  1.  Identify current research findings on group and telehealth-based delivery of interventions for youth with ASD
  2. Identify common barriers to implementing RUBI in group and telehealth formats
  3.  Identify the modifications required to successfully implement RUBI in these novel contexts
